The Koh Overview

What this guide covers

Understanding the costs and budget for Koh Tao helps you plan your trip more effectively. Daily expenses vary depending on your travel style, but overall, Koh Tao is considered one of the more affordable island destinations in Thailand.

Whether you are travelling on a backpacker budget or looking for premium comfort, the island accommodates both ends. The trick is knowing where the money goes so you do not get caught out by the obvious budget-busters (Open Water dive course, ferry overage, ATM fees).

Budget category-busters

Open Water dive course around 9,500 to 12,000 THB, the single biggest budget addition. If you are here for diving, factor it as a separate line item, not part of daily spend. Ferry overage on Lomprayah, 200 THB per 10 kg over the 20 kg luggage cap.

ATM withdrawal fees 250 to 350 THB per transaction, take out larger amounts less often. Always decline currency conversion at the ATM, the rate is worse than the fee. Koh Nang Yuan entry 250 THB per person plus boat fare 300 to 600 THB. Activity tax, every paid activity adds up faster than meals.

Best for: avoiding the surprise spend that wrecks the trip budget.
