Koh Tao Costs & Budget
Daily budgets from 1,000 THB to 8,000+ THB. Where the money actually goes, the category-busters that catch travellers out, and how to plan your spend without overthinking.
What this guide covers
Understanding the costs and budget for Koh Tao helps you plan your trip more effectively. Daily expenses vary depending on your travel style, but overall, Koh Tao is considered one of the more affordable island destinations in Thailand.
Whether you are travelling on a backpacker budget or looking for premium comfort, the island accommodates both ends. The trick is knowing where the money goes so you do not get caught out by the obvious budget-busters (Open Water dive course, ferry overage, ATM fees).

Weekly budget 7,000 to 12,000 THB excluding any dive course or major activity. Most achievable in shoulder and off-season. December and January push prices up by 20 to 30 percent, expect 9,000 to 14,000 THB in peak weeks.

Weekly budget 20,000 to 35,000 THB. The sweet spot for most travellers, you can eat well, sleep in privacy, and not micro-budget every meal. Couples and small groups often land here.
Best for: couples, first-time visitors, comfort-without-luxury travellers.
Best hotelsComfort budget
Daily budget around 5,000 to 8,000 THB. Boutique hotel or villa 3,500 to 6,000 THB a night, full restaurant dining (400 to 1,000 THB plates plus drinks), private transfers, multiple paid activities (dive day, island tour, spa session), tips factored in.
Weekly budget 35,000 to 60,000 THB. Premium without going full luxury, comfortable for couples, small groups, or longer relaxed trips.
Best for: travellers who want comfort without micro-managing the budget.
Villas guidePremium budget
Daily budget 8,000 THB and up, often 12,000 to 20,000 THB at the high end. Luxury villa 8,000 to 15,000+ THB a night (Cape Shark, Phandara, Jamahkiri level), private dive trips, premium spa packages, full-service everything.
Weekly budget 60,000 to 150,000+ THB. Most premium travellers stay 4 to 7 nights, longer stays push the total higher. The villas and hotels at this tier are priced comparably to global luxury destinations, with the bonus of Thai-island setting.
Best for: honeymooners, luxury travellers, group villa rentals.
Premium hotelsBudget category-busters
Open Water dive course around 9,500 to 12,000 THB, the single biggest budget addition. If you are here for diving, factor it as a separate line item, not part of daily spend. Ferry overage on Lomprayah, 200 THB per 10 kg over the 20 kg luggage cap.
ATM withdrawal fees 250 to 350 THB per transaction, take out larger amounts less often. Always decline currency conversion at the ATM, the rate is worse than the fee. Koh Nang Yuan entry 250 THB per person plus boat fare 300 to 600 THB. Activity tax, every paid activity adds up faster than meals.
Best for: avoiding the surprise spend that wrecks the trip budget.
