The Snorkelling Overview

What this guide covers

Not diving? You are still getting in the water. Snorkelling in Koh Tao is one of the easiest and most rewarding things you can do on the island. The reefs start just meters from shore, the water is warm and clear, and you do not need any experience.

You can walk straight in from the beach or join a boat tour and hit multiple spots in one day. This guide covers both.

Why snorkelling in Koh Tao

The underwater world here starts close to the surface, and close to shore. That is what makes it work for everyone. You do not need to be a strong swimmer, you do not need to go far, and you do not need luck to see something good.

Coral reefs, tropical fish, turtles, and blacktip reef sharks moving through the shallows. This is not rare on Koh Tao. It is part of a normal day in the water.

Best for: non-divers, families, solo travellers, couples.

Best spots

Shark Bay (Ao Thian Ok) is reliable for blacktip reef sharks and turtles in shallow water. Ao Leuk has clear water, strong coral, easy access, one of the best all-around spots. Tanote Bay has rock formations and a jump rock that makes it popular with younger crowds.

Freedom Beach is quieter and less crowded. Koh Nang Yuan via short boat ride from Mae Haad has a sandbar and excellent snorkelling at Japanese Garden, entry fee 100 THB applies. Hin Wong Bay on the east side has fewer people and good marine life, worth it if you have a scooter.

Best for: walk-in snorkelling and spotting marine life from shore.

Island tours

Want to see multiple spots without organising transport, just join a boat tour. Most circle the island and stop at 4 to 5 snorkelling locations, with lunch, equipment, and hotel pickup included. Typical stops, Koh Nang Yuan, Shark Bay, Ao Leuk, Hin Wong Bay.

Morning tours have better visibility. Full-day tours give more time in the water. Prices run 800 to 1,500 THB per person depending on duration and operator.

Best for: half-day or full-day water-focused itineraries.

Tips

Go early. Better visibility, calmer water. Use reef-safe sunscreen, regular sunscreen damages coral. Do not touch anything, coral, turtles, sharks, observe only.

Book ahead in high season, December to April fills up fast. Bring a waterproof bag, boats get wet. Note Koh Nang Yuan does not allow fins, so plan for fin-free snorkelling there.

Best for: avoiding the common snorkelling-day mistakes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions travellers ask us most before they arrive.

Is snorkelling in Koh Tao worth it?
Yes, and it is one of the few places where snorkelling competes with diving. Reefs start meters from shore, turtles and reef sharks are regular sightings, you do not need to go deep to see something worth seeing.
What is the best snorkelling spot?
Ao Leuk is consistently rated the best all-around spot, clear water, strong coral, easy access. Shark Bay is the go-to for turtles. Koh Nang Yuan (Japanese Garden site) is the most visually impressive but requires a short boat ride.
Can I snorkel without a tour?
Yes. Several spots are accessible directly from shore, Shark Bay, Ao Leuk, Tanote Bay are all walkable or scooter-reachable. For Koh Nang Yuan you need a longtail boat, around 200 to 250 THB each way from Sairee or Mae Haad.
How much does snorkelling cost?
From shore is essentially free, just rent a mask and snorkel if you do not have your own (100 to 200 THB a day). Organised boat tours run 800 to 1,500 THB per person, equipment, lunch, hotel pickup, photos usually included.
Are there sharks when snorkelling?
Yes. Blacktip reef sharks are common at Shark Bay and Ao Leuk, often in very shallow water. They are harmless and typically shy around people.
Is snorkelling good for beginners?
Yes. Life jackets are provided on all organised tours, guides are in the water with you, bays are sheltered and calm. Even nervous first-timers consistently report feeling comfortable by the first stop.
Can I snorkel at Koh Nang Yuan?
Yes, but fins are not allowed on the island. You snorkel without fins, fine since the water is calm and shallow. There is a 100 THB entry fee per person on top of the boat transfer cost.
