what to bring, what matters

Koh Tao Island Essentials

Not just what to pack, but how to move and operate once you are here. The small things travellers forget that actually matter.

The Koh Overview

What this guide covers

Before arriving, there are a few things that make a real difference on Koh Tao. Not just what to pack, but how to move and operate once you are here. Most travellers do not struggle with the island itself, they struggle with small things they did not think about in advance.

Packing light is one of the biggest advantages you can give yourself. The weather is hot and humid, you will spend most of your time in swimwear and light clothes, anything extra quickly becomes unnecessary weight.

What to actually bring

Lightweight clothes are obvious. The useful extras are what matter. A dry bag or waterproof pouch is one of the most valuable things you can have, especially for boat trips, snorkelling, or unexpected rain.

Reef-safe sunscreen, both for protecting your skin and the marine life. A reusable water bottle helps more than you expect, refill stations are common and it saves you constantly buying plastic bottles. Basic medication is enough, you do not need a full kit, pharmacies are easy to find on the island.

Best for: pre-trip packing checklists.

Documents & insurance

Documents are one of the most overlooked things. Keep digital copies of your passport, bookings, and especially dive certifications if you plan to dive, often required on arrival. Travel insurance is another travellers ignore until it is too late.

If you are diving or doing activities, having proper coverage makes a big difference and is strongly recommended. Most policies require a valid motorcycle licence to cover scooter accidents, check the small print before you rent.

Best for: avoiding the most common pre-trip oversights.

ATM fees & cash

Cash is essential on Koh Tao. Smaller restaurants, taxis, and many activities do not accept cards, you will rely on ATMs during your stay. As of 2026, most ATMs charge 250 THB withdrawal fee, with confirmed cases of 350 THB on some machines, especially for Mastercard cards.

Withdrawal limits are usually 20,000 to 30,000 THB per transaction, take out larger amounts less often to reduce fees. When the ATM asks about currency conversion, always decline, the worse exchange rate can cost more than the ATM fee itself.

Best for: minimising the ATM fees over a week-plus stay.

Logistics that matter

Ferry timing is one of the biggest factors that affects your trip. Arriving late in the day can mean losing key time, missing activities, or having to reorganise plans on the spot. Plan ahead, the Ferry Guide covers it.

Transport is the second one. If you are not staying in a central area like Sairee, getting around without a scooter becomes slower and more expensive than expected. This is one of the most common frustrations travellers mention after arriving.

Best for: pre-arrival logistics planning.

Things people forget

A local SIM card is something most travellers end up needing quickly. Maps, transport, bookings, communication, all easier with a local data plan. Around 300 THB for a month of tourist data, available at all Thai airports.

Pack less, but pack for movement. Most days involve switching between beaches, viewpoints, and different parts of the island, anything that slows you down becomes more of a problem than a benefit. Mobility matters more than having extra options.

Best for: travellers who like to move around freely.

250 THB at most ATMs in 2026, with 350 THB on some machines (especially Mastercard). Take out larger amounts less often. Always decline currency conversion.

Yes. Around 300 THB for a month of tourist data. Available at all Thai airports. Makes everything easier, maps, transport, bookings.

What about plug adapters?
Thai outlets accept Type A (US two-pin) and Type C (European two-pin) plugs. Most travellers do not need an adapter unless you are coming from the UK or Australia.
