Best Time to Visit

The most popular time to visit Koh Tao is between December and April, when the weather is sunny, the sea is calm, and conditions are perfect for diving and snorkelling. From May to September the island still sees good weather, although there can be occasional rain. Less crowded, a good option for travellers who prefer a quieter experience.

October and November are the rainiest months, but even during this time Koh Tao still has its charm and accommodation prices are often lower. Choosing the right time depends on what you want, perfect weather, fewer crowds, or better deals.

Best for: matching your trip to the weather, sea conditions and crowd level.

Koh Tao Itineraries

Unsure how to organise your trip, follow a simple plan. For a 3-day trip, focus on key highlights, beaches, snorkelling, and one viewpoint hike. With 5 days you can explore more, including a dive course, island tours, and several different beaches.

A 7-day trip lets you fully experience the island, combining adventure, relaxation, food, and nightlife. The best approach is to balance activities with downtime so you can enjoy the island without feeling rushed.

Best for: 3-day, 5-day or 7-day visitors planning their structure.

Costs & Budget

Understanding costs helps you plan better. Backpacker travellers can find dorm beds from 250 THB, eat from 60 to 150 THB a meal at local Thai spots, and rent a scooter from 200 THB a day. Plan around 1,000 to 1,500 THB a day for a backpacker week.

Mid-range comfort runs 2,500 to 4,500 THB a day, private bungalow plus mix of dining and one or two paid activities. Premium villas and resorts push 8,000 THB+ a day. Add around 10,000 THB for an Open Water dive course, the single biggest budget category-buster on the island.

Best for: budgeting before you book, sense-checking your daily spend.

Island Essentials

Pack light. The weather is hot and humid, you will spend most of your time in swimwear and light clothes, anything extra becomes unnecessary weight. Bring a dry bag for boat trips, reef-safe sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, basic medication, and digital copies of your passport and dive certifications.

Insurance is non-negotiable if you dive or do activities. ATM withdrawal fees are 250 to 350 THB on the island, take out larger amounts less often. When the ATM asks about currency conversion, always decline.

Best for: pre-trip packing checklist and money strategy.
