Beaches in Koh Tao

More than 20 beaches with very different personalities. Some social and easy to reach, others take a scooter and a bit of effort. Those are usually the ones worth it.

The Beaches Overview

What this guide covers

Koh Tao’s beaches are one of the main reasons people end up staying longer than planned. The island packs in more than 20 beaches with very different personalities, social and easy, hidden and remote.

Most travellers do not just stay in one place. They move around, combining beach hopping with snorkelling or island tours to reach bays not as easy to access by land.

Sairee Beach

Sairee is the longest and most social beach on the island, and for many people it is the base. Everything is within walking distance, restaurants, dive shops, beach bars, accommodation, which makes it the easiest place to settle in.

During the day it is relaxed, but by sunset it starts to shift. Beach bars fill up, music comes on, and it becomes one of the main nightlife areas on the island.

Best for: social travellers, first-time visitors, walkable bases.

Ao Leuk

Ao Leuk is one of the most complete beaches on the island. The water is calm, the sand is soft, and the snorkelling starts almost immediately from shore. One of the easiest places to see marine life without planning anything.

There is usually a 100 THB entry fee at the main entrance, but it is possible to access the beach for free by continuing past it and entering through the restaurant area. Either way, a spot where people end up staying longer than expected.

Best for: snorkel-from-shore days, all-day relaxed beach hangs.

Tanote Bay & Shark Bay

Tanote feels more open and laid-back, with strong snorkelling and fewer crowds than the main beaches. The well-known jumping rock adds something different, but even without it, the bay stands out for how much you can see in the water.

Shark Bay is better known for turtles than sharks, and seeing one here is one of the more memorable experiences on the island. Calm water, slow relaxed snorkelling. Access often goes through a resort with an entry fee, decide in advance if it fits your plan.

Best for: half-day scooter trips with snorkelling time built in.

Quieter beaches

Freedom Beach is smaller, quieter, and feels more removed from the main areas. Often combined with John-Suwan Viewpoint, which makes it worth the trip. The water is clear, the setting is simple, a good place to slow things down.

Mango Bay is more isolated and usually reached by boat rather than road, with some of the healthiest coral around the island. Hin Wong Bay sits on the east side with less infrastructure, fewer people, and strong snorkelling when conditions are right.

Best for: travellers who want to escape the social Sairee crowd.

Tips for the beaches

The best way to experience Koh Tao is to move around. Each beach feels different at different times of day. Plan a loose route instead of staying in one place. Bring cash, go early or late to avoid crowds, check conditions, the east and west sides feel very different depending on the wind.

Most people spend 3 to 5 days exploring different beaches while mixing in snorkelling, short hikes, and time around Sairee. It is not just about finding one good spot, it is about seeing how different each bay feels.

Best for: building a Koh Tao trip around the coast, not the dive sites.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The questions travellers ask us most before they arrive.

What are the best beaches in Koh Tao for snorkelling?
Ao Leuk and Tanote Bay are most reliable, both with clear water, good visibility, reefs starting just meters from shore. Shark Bay is also worth trying, especially early in the morning.
Do I need a scooter to visit the best beaches?
Not strictly, but it changes how much you can see. The island is small but beaches are spread out, with a scooter you can explore multiple bays in a single day. Songthaews and longtail boats also work as alternatives.
What is the best beach overall?
Sairee is the easiest and most social. Ao Leuk is the most complete for swimming and snorkelling. Quieter bays like Freedom or Hin Wong are preferred by people looking for something more relaxed.
Are beaches crowded?
Some beaches get busy, especially Sairee and accessible bays during midday. Move around and adjust timing. Less central beaches and earlier hours feel quieter.
Can you swim easily at all beaches?
Most are swimmable but conditions vary. Some have rocky entry points, others depend on tide levels. Beaches like Ao Leuk and Tanote are usually more consistent. Check conditions locally before heading out.
Better to explore yourself or book a tour?
Exploring on your own gives flexibility. Tours are useful for places harder to access by land like Mango Bay, or combining multiple stops. Most travellers do a mix of both.
Best time of day to visit beaches?
Early morning and late afternoon. Mornings are calmer and less crowded, late afternoon has better light. Midday is busiest, especially near popular access points.
